In India, prestigious airlines such as Air India, Indigo, SpiceJet, and AirAsia offer comprehensive Indigo cadet pilot program in India, providing aspiring pilots with the opportunity to receive top-tier aviation education and training. 

The selection spreads over 4 phases as listed below:

STAGE 1 - APPLICATION SCREENING
Once an application is submitted, the Airline meticulously evaluates it against predefined standards, emphasizing the applicant's educational achievements, character attributes, and health status to ensure a comprehensive match. Thos who match the following eligibility criteria will be called for stage 2.

Eligibility Requirements:

Nationality: Must be an Indian citizen.

Age Criteria: Candidates must be between 18 to 30 years of age.

Language Proficiency: Applicants must exhibit proficiency in both written and spoken English.

Health Standards: Prospective candidates should be in robust physical and mental condition.

Height Requirements: A minimum height of 158 cm is necessary.

Medical Examination: Candidates are required to successfully complete a DGCA Class 1 Medical examination before commencing flight training.

Educational Qualifications: A High School Education Certificate is required. Certificates from the National Institute of Open Schooling are accepted. Candidates must have secured a minimum of 60% in their 10+2 examinations, including 60% marks in English, Mathematics, and Physics.

STAGE 2 - COMPUTERIZED PILOT APTITUDE SCREENING SYSTEM

The Pilot Aptitude Test is a comprehensive psychomotor evaluation designed to assess a candidate's ability to multitask and coordinate actions with visual cues effectively. Different Flight Training Organizations (FTOs) refer to it by various names, such as COMPASS, PILAPT or CASS, but the core objective remains consistent across the board. The test challenges candidates to perform a primary task, such as maneuvering an aircraft within a designated area using a joystick, while simultaneously handling secondary tasks. These auxiliary tasks can range from memorizing and recalling numbers, solving basic arithmetic problems, to typing numbers displayed on the screen or following verbal commands through a headset. This rigorous testing environment is intended to stretch the candidates to their limits, gauging their performance under intense pressure and ensuring they can deliver optimal performance consistently.

Candidates are usually provided with a 5-minute practice session before the actual test. This brief period is crucial for familiarizing oneself with the test mechanics, so it's advisable to utilize this time judiciously to prepare effectively.

  • Short-term memory (Memory)
  • Mental arithmetic (Mathematics)
  • Spatial Orientation (Orientation)
  • Multi-tasking (Task Manager)
  • Eye-Hand-Foot Coordination.
  • The aptitude to fly an aircraft.

Candidates who achieve a score above the minimum threshold established by the FTO are then invited to participate in the Personality Assessment Test. This subsequent phase involves a Psychometric Questionnaire, comprising 100-200 questions that delve into various human traits, such as leadership, friendliness, stress, confidence, morality, liberalism etc.  Participants are allotted one to two hour to complete this assessment.

The Psychometric test, tailored by the operators, aims to uncover these qualities through straight forward "Personality-based" questions to be answered as Strongly Agree, Agree, Neither Agree nor Disagree, Disagree, Strongly Disagree

A valuable tip for candidates undergoing the Psychometric assessment is to remain authentic in their responses. It's crucial to read each question thoroughly and respond with a level-headed approach. Remember, the test is designed to gauge your true personality; there are no inherently "right" or "wrong" answers. However, honesty is paramount, as the assessment system is adept at identifying discrepancies in responses. Approach the questionnaire with sincerity, reflecting your genuine self in your answers.

 

STAGE 3 - GROUP DISCUSSION

Stage 3 commences with a Group Discussion, where candidates are grouped with other successful applicants to deliberate on a specified topic collectively. This setup not only facilitates an exchange of diverse viewpoints but also allows the panel to pose counter-questions to each participant, challenging them to substantiate their opinions with logical reasoning.

It's important to note that the essence of this stage isn't to dominate the conversation but to engage in a balanced discourse, where listening is as crucial as articulating your thoughts. The ability to convey your ideas clearly and respectfully, considering and responding to the perspectives of others, is key to advancing in the selection process. At the conclusion of the Group Discussion, the representatives promptly notify the candidates who have made it through to the final stage of the selection process: a Personal Interview with the Panel. This next phase is an opportunity for candidates to further demonstrate their suitability for the Cadet Pilot Programme.

 

STAGE 4 – PERSONAL INTERVIEW

the final phase of the selection process is the Personal Interview. The interview panel usually consists of experienced professionals from Human Resources and Flight Operations, including a Captain, who collaborate to assess and understand the candidate's suitability for the role.

The focus of the interview leans towards non-technical aspects, aiming to explore the candidate's motivations and personality. Questions often cover a range of topics, such as the candidate's reasons for applying to the cadet pilot program, their aspirations to become a pilot, their vision for themselves in the next five years, and significant life experiences that have shaped them. This conversational approach helps the panel gauge the candidate's passion, commitment, and long-term career objectives.

Typically lasting between 20 to 30 minutes, the interview provides a valuable opportunity for candidates to showcase their individuality and how their aspirations align with the aviation industry's demands. It's an essential step where personal expression and clarity of thought can significantly impact the outcome, guiding the panel towards a decision on the candidate's readiness to embark on a career in aviation.
